I Stay Wiza

Thanks to my beautiful talented wife for allowing me to be a featured guest on her blog. I’m long time reader, first time writer, so if you don’t like it, you can kick rocks. Kidding! But not really…Let me tell you something, while my bride is #becomingwiza, I’ve been Wiza all my life. So, how do I stay Wiza? Well, it’s a work in progress. I will say, over my 33 years of being a Wiza, I think the recognition of not thinking I know it all, makes me more wiza than I’ve ever been. My deepest #wizdom comes from the fact that I haven’t figured it all out yet…and I do my best to embrace that. Thats what #becomingwiza is all about to me.

I’ll be the first to say when I was 18, I thought I knew it all. There I was on my way to college; which was just solidifying the fact that I thought I was grown man…WRONG. Then, after college, I have my degree and think I know it all because…they teach you everything you need to know in college, right? NOPE. Buut, you’d think after I have my first official job, earn my master’s degree, buy my own house, now I got life in the bag?!

(Insert line from Jay-Z’s 30 Something, “…baby boy cuz I’m all grown up!”) FALSE. Now, I’m married, we got ourselves a Boogie and Baby Wiz is on his way, c’mon, we’re talking grown man status! WRONG AGAIN!

Thinking you understand something so well when you haven’t lived or experienced it yourself, is nonsense. Ridiculous right? It took twelve plus years for me to push pride and ego aside and finally accept this. I know, crazy. Not easy to admit your wrong. Sometimes apologies, asking for help, the words “you’re right” and “my bad”, don’t taste so sweet coming out of your mouth, but in reality it should only help us be better…if done the right way. As a Christian, I believe we are supposed to repent for our sins and all is forgiven. Ironically outside my personal faith, I believe when we recognize our faults and lack of knowledge it allows us to grow. We learn through failure, we rise because we fall, break down before you build up, you know, all that stuff.  It’s easier to progress when you are open to the idea. #wizdom

I think it was in the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure when Bill reads Socrates Paradox; “the only knowing is knowing that you know nothing.” See?. Who knew a young Keanu and that other guy would provide me one of the most enlightening things I have learned in life. Maybe accepting that you don’t know everything will actually open a door to better understanding. BUT HEY, WHAT DO I KNOW?

Stay Wiza

  1. Noah, maybe you are “wiza” than you think you are 😉
I think that it is totally normal to feel that you know it all when you are young. My teenagers think they know it all and that my husband and I don’t know anything. I felt the same way at their age! Parents make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes. That’s just how it is. I promise you will make more mistakes as a parent then you might want to admit. I know I certainly have. You have always been one of my most favorite human and I’m excited to see what the future holds for you and your amazing wife Alyssa!
Love you guys, love the blog!!
Have you guys ever thought of doing fun work shops for teens? You both have so much “wizadom” and perspective to share. “Wizaisms”
You know how to reach me if you want to chat. 🙂
