How the Messy Girl Gets Organized

I really want to believe that I am a clean freak. Like, in my head I never leave clothes on the floor, the dishes in the sink get done immediately and I enjoy folding and putting away laundry.  Don’t get me wrong, I have my moments that shock my less messy husband when I unexpectedly pick up my socks off the bathroom floor without him reminding me. However, I’m still the messy one. I can’t help it! I’ll be 30 this winter and I think I’ve even made a lenten promise to God at least 10 times that for 40 days I would be less messy. Yet, here I am with clothes and makeup everywhere and mail thats been in a pile for weeks..oh and don’t let me forget what the inside of my car looks like.

I write this with a bit of embarrassment but because I am on this #becomingwiza journey right alongside you; I have had to learn what works best for me when it comes to not living like a complete slob. (Plus my family reads this and ya know, my inner 6 year old still wants a gold star for a clean room)

For my fellow messy girls out there, with your pretty faces in the clouds working on your next big plan to save the world… our strengths are just found in other super cool ways. 😉 Don’t be too hard on yourself, I give you full permission to be the beautiful lil mess you are.

5 Second Rule

This book was a GAME CHANGER for me i

n so many ways. If you haven’t read Mel Robins “The 5 second Rule“, I highly encourage you to. Without completely giving the premiss of it away, the book taught me that I must act FAST and stop letting my mind talk me out of doing something so that I achieve way more. Because honestly, “you’re never going to feel like it”. So, how does this make me less messy and more organized? I try really hard to just act on the mess.  If I don’t, it doesn’t get picked up. For example, I see the dishes in the sink, count to 5…and just effin do them. Or I take the project on that I SO do not feeling like doing (like organizing my closet) and do it first. When I’m done, not only do I feel better but my house AND my mind are much more organized.

Help Meeeeee

I gave up a long time ago trying to get organized by myself. I call for backup whenever necessary. That rachet closet of mine…I didn’t organize it by myself, I called in someone who is SUPER organized and she worked her magic on it. There is seriously no shame in getting help from your Type A bestie. On that note, hire someone if you can afford it! Damn, time is precious…hire someone to clean your house if you can! You feel better with it being clean and you are supporting their small business, everybody wins. If you can’t afford it, ask your mom, tag team with your roomie or hubby to help ya. Ask the right person for help…they will be happy to do so and you will be less stressed when your shit is organized.

Life is FULL

Like, so full. Like, if you want to makes plans I’m free in October kinda full. So how does one keep it all together and still show up on time? I’d love to tell you I use really fun markers and update a Pinterest worthy board in my perfectly cleaned kitchen…but I don’t. I have tried every paper calendar and pretty marker combo you can think of..oh and a white board too, with ZERO luck because after 1 month of events I stop using it. I rely SOLEY on my i-phone. I share a calendar with my husband and it works so well. If it isn’t on the calendar, it doesn’t exist in real life. We add everything to it, doctors appointments, golf outings, dinner plans, when our dog is due for his heartworm meds…everything. Wanna know what…my life isn’t going to become less full of places we have to go or people we want to see. BUT what has helped by having it all in one place is the capability to manage it. Maybe for you it is a cute notepad or a whiteboard, either way being able to see events coming up allows me to plan the day to day better.

Cereal and Take Out

Because my calendar is organized on a high level, I can plan with much more ease my day to day. For me, the day to day mess is the real struggle. Where I have seen it get sloppy is in meal prepping. Not meal prepping gives me SO much stress. My mornings become more hectic because I didn’t plan lunches, dinners become take out and kill my budget, and to be honest, it stresses me the eff out. Especially because I workout 5 days a week (even throughout my pregnancy) and I want to fuel my body the right way. Not every little thing is perfect about my “meal prep” but here is what helps me:

  • Review the nights that dinner needs to be made vs. eating out or eating leftovers
  • Plan ahead of time what you will make on the days that you will cook
  • Make meal prepping easy by using a crock pot, buy grab and go foods, and try to make lunches or chop veggies on Sunday.

I have to make it easy for myself because if I don’t, I really do become a mess in every other aspect of my life. Meal prepping for me is like making the bed in the morning (I never make my bed to be clear). The weeks where my and my families food is planned and organized, everything else follows. If you’re a messy girl like me, don’t worry…I am still quite messy and figuring it out too! I will leave my coffee cup on the counter instead of putting it in the dishwasher, live out of a clean laundry basket instead of putting away my clothes and I am positive you will find gum wrappers in my car (unless my husband gets so annoyed he just cleans it). Becoming Wiza is about the journey and learning what will help you stay more organized. This is not about becoming someone you are not wired to be like. As much as I try, I will never be the girl with the perfectly clean kitchen 7 days a week.  I will leave mail sitting in a pile for a month. And, as much as I suggest that you try these tips, I will fall short and not always follow them. I am a messy, unorganized work in progress. When I am #becomingwiza about my messy lifestyle I will have to act fast on the chore, need to ask for help, take the time to clean up my calendar, and finally,  meal prep the stress away.

What do you do to help stay organized? How does this help your mind stay organized? Let me know, we’re in this less messy journey together!

xoxo
